Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about making your will online — in plain English, no legal jargon.
Getting started
How does Willow work?
Willow asks you a series of straightforward questions — about yourself, your family, who you want to benefit from your estate, and who should carry out your wishes. Based on your answers it produces a complete, solicitor-reviewed will that you can print, sign, and keep safe. The whole process takes less than 10 minutes, and you don't need any legal knowledge.
How much does it cost to make a will with Willow?
Willow offers three plans. A Basic Will costs £49.99 and suits people with straightforward wishes. A Premium Will is £99.99 and adds guardianship for children, funeral wishes, and unlimited gifts. Mirror Wills for couples are £149.99 for both documents. All plans let you update your will as many times as you need. See our full pricing page for a detailed comparison — and remember, a solicitor typically charges £150–£300 for a single will.
Who is Willow suitable for?
Willow is designed for adults living in England and Wales who want to write a will without visiting a solicitor. It works well for people with straightforward to moderately complex estates — including those with children, a property, specific gifts to leave, and funeral preferences. If your situation involves business interests, overseas assets, or a complex trust, we'd recommend seeking specialist legal advice. Willow is not currently suitable for residents of Scotland or Northern Ireland, where succession law differs.
How long does it take?
Most people complete their will in under 10 minutes. You can save your progress at any point and come back to it later — Willow saves your answers automatically as you go.
Legal validity
Is a Willow will legally valid?
Yes — provided you follow the signing and witnessing instructions included with your document. Our templates are based on solicitor-reviewed precedents for England and Wales under the Wills Act 1837. Willow is an independent will-writing service and is not a law firm.
Do I need a solicitor to make a will?
No. There is no legal requirement to use a solicitor to write a will in England and Wales. A will is valid as long as it is in writing, signed by you in front of two independent witnesses, and those witnesses also sign. Willow's solicitor-reviewed templates handle the correct legal wording for you.
How do I make my will legally binding?
Once you have printed your will, you must sign it in the presence of two independent adult witnesses — both present at the same time. Each witness must then sign the document while you watch. Witnesses must be over 18 and must not be beneficiaries of the will (or married to one). Full step-by-step signing instructions are printed at the end of your document.
Does Willow cover Scotland or Northern Ireland?
No. Willow's templates are written for the law of England and Wales only. Succession law in Scotland (governed by the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964) and Northern Ireland is materially different. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, please seek specialist legal advice.
What's in your will
What does a Willow will include?
Your will covers: revocation of any previous wills, appointment of executors (the people who carry out your wishes), guardians for any children under 18 (Premium plan), specific cash gifts, gifts of personal belongings, property gifts, distribution of your remaining estate, funeral wishes (Premium plan), and a full signing and witnessing clause. You can see a complete example on our sample will page.
What is an executor?
An executor is the person — or people — responsible for carrying out the instructions in your will after you die. This includes registering the death, dealing with banks and other organisations, paying any debts, and distributing your estate to the people you've named. You can appoint up to four executors. It's usually a spouse, adult child, or trusted friend.
What is the residuary estate?
Your residuary estate is everything that remains after your specific gifts have been given out and any debts or taxes have been paid. Most people leave their residuary estate to their spouse or partner, and then to their children if their spouse has already died. You decide who gets it and in what proportions.
Can I appoint guardians for my children?
Yes — guardianship is included in the Premium Will and Mirror Wills plans. You can name both a primary guardian (your first choice) and a substitute guardian (a backup if your first choice is unable to act). Guardian appointment is not available on the Basic Will plan.
Can I include funeral wishes in my will?
Yes — you can specify burial or cremation, and add any special instructions. This is available on Premium and Mirror plans. Bear in mind that wills are not always read before a funeral, so it's a good idea to also let your family or executor know your wishes in advance.
Can I leave a gift to a charity?
Yes. You can leave a cash sum, a specific item, or a share of your remaining estate to any registered UK charity. Simply enter the charity's name and its registered charity number during the gifts section.
Your account & data
Is my personal information secure?
Yes. Your answers are saved to your own password-protected account and are never shared with third parties, sold, or used for marketing. Willow uses Supabase for secure, encrypted storage. You can permanently delete your account and all your data at any time from the account menu.
Can I save my progress and come back later?
Yes. Willow saves your answers automatically as you go. Sign in on any device — phone, tablet, or computer — and you'll pick up exactly where you left off.
Can I update my will after I've finished it?
Yes. Your plan lets you return to Willow at any time, update your answers, and produce a fresh document. You will need to print, sign, and witness the new version — and the old one should be destroyed so there is no confusion.
What happens to my data if I delete my account?
Deleting your account permanently removes all your personal information and will data from our servers. This cannot be undone. You can delete your account at any time from the menu in the navigation bar.
